Network TechnologyThe SmartLabrador Network is a wide area, private network linking communities throughout Labrador. It provides the capability for videoconferencing and data communications. Our network is linked to the outside world by videoconference bridging facilities at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Internet connectivity provided by Aliant NewTel. Network DesignThe SmartLabrador Network is in fact comprised of four separate networks. Separate networks are provided for:
This network design ensures privacy, security and efficiency for network clients. Separate bandwidth is provided for videoconferencing and data/Internet communications. This ensures that videoconference quality is never degraded by heavy Internet or data traffic. TechnologiesConnectivity is provided by a variety of different technologies. Primary network connectivity links SmartLabrador communities with the network backbone. Primary connectivity is either C-band satellite, provided by Telesat Canada, or frame relay circuit, provided by Aliant NewTel. Within communities, secondary sites are linked to primary sites via wireless or DSL modem. See the Community Sites page for more information on this. Network BackboneThe network backbone provides connectivity between satellite-based and frame relay-based sites, and also provides connectivity outside of the SmartLabrador Network. See Network Backbone for more information. Last modified: 06 Jun 2003 2:04 pm (Atlantic Time)
